One cup of coffee per day does not seem to raise the risk of hypertension.
According to a recent Japanese scientific study, the first of its type to demonstrate this connection globally, drinking two or more cups of coffee per day is linked to a twofold increased risk of dying from cardiovascular disease in patients with severe hypertension (above 16/10).
Even though both coffee and tea contain caffeine, just one cup of coffee or one cup of green tea per day does not seem to enhance the risk of hypertension. A cup of green or black tea is said to have 30–50 mg of caffeine, but a cup of coffee has 80–100.
The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the polyphenols found in green tea are primarily responsible for its health benefits.

What the Study Found
Data on more than 18,600 men and women aged 40 to 79 years old were analysed by the researchers, who were led by Professor Hiroyasu Iso of Osaka University and the National Center for Global Health and Medicine in Tokyo. Their findings were published in the American medical journal “Journal of American Heart Association.” 842 cardiovascular fatalities were noted over over two decades.
According to earlier studies, one cup of coffee per day lowers the chance of dying after a heart attack and may also lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in healthy people.
Though it is unclear if this is a result of caffeine or another coffee ingredient, other studies have shown that frequent coffee drinking may lower the chance of contracting chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes and certain malignancies, helps regulate appetite, and lowers the risk of depression. On the other side, excessive coffee use on a regular basis might raise blood pressure and cause sleeplessness, anxiety, and palpitations.
Measurements of pressure exceeding 13/8 are classified as hypertension by American scientific groups. Measures over 16/10 and particularly severe measurements above 18/11 indicate severe hypertension.
